Liu Shiming Art Foundation Screening ProgramASIAN? FEMALE? NOUVEAU FILM!
Featuring three short films by emerging filmmakers Sam Kumiko Sheridan, Michelle Ma, and Chris Zou, this event highlights the personal and societal challenges faced by Asian women through powerful storytelling. Following the screenings, a 45-minute discussion and Q&A will be moderated by guest speaker Hindley Wang.
Featured Film:
-Muted, by Chris Zou, 6 minutes. The story of Jessica, a Chinese American high school student under immense academic pressure, whose actions to enhance her study performance threaten her friendships and explore her complex relationship with her mother.
-Blue Desert, by Michelle Ma, 16 minutes. A poignant letter to the filmmaker’s mother, reflecting on their relationship through calm, introspective narration that weaves together past and present, dreams and reality.
-Ume or (The Will to Fly Blind), by Sam Kumiko Sheridan, 15 minutes. A surreal narrative about a 17-year-old Japanese American girl in NYC, exploring her inner struggle with the decision of abortion, portrayed through the transformation of her arms into wings.
Guest Speaker:
Hindley Wang
Hindley is a bilingual art writer, curator, translator and art adviser, based in New York and Shanghai. She previously served as the acting studio manager for Xu Bing Studio, NY, where she had oversights of archive, editing, special projects, publication and translation. She has extensive experience working both in the mainland art scene and the New York art world.
