The Work and Legacy of Chinese Sculptor Liu Shiming

Join us for a reception and panel discussion on the work and legacy of Chinese sculptor Liu Shiming (1926-2010). His sculptors have made a distinct impact on the course of modern Chinese sculpture art. 

I think that sculpture should be focused on people and the depiction of people, because people are social beings and creators of art. When we lose people and the human spirit, art loses its soul — Liu Shiming.

Liu Shiming works have been displayed in prominent galleries and spaces across the globe, including exhibitions in Beijing, Washington D.C., and most notably a special exhibition in the main atrium of the Oculus in New York City.

Dean Byrne and the entire Macaulay community is honored to host this special panel discussion and installation ceremony in collaboration with the Liu Shiming Art Foundation.

Maria Cristina Pio Moderator

Maria Cristina Pio is the Co-Director; Director of Education and Administration at the Godwin-Ternbach Museum at Queens College, where she oversees all aspects of education programing and administration. She also teaches as an adjunct instructor in the Seminar 1 course The Arts in NYC at Macaulay Honors College at Queens College and is a contractual educator at the Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University.  Prior to joining the Godwin-Ternbach Museum, Maria worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The College of New Rochelle.   She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from Queens College (2010), a Master of Arts in Art History from the Universiteit van Amsterdam in the Netherlands (2012), and a Master of Science in Education degree in Leadership in Museum Education from Bank Street College (2016).

Fran Kauman Partner, Kaufman Vardy Projects

Fran Kaufman is a partner in Kaufman Vardy Projects, an international consultancy based in New York and Miami focused on strategic marketing and curatorial practice, as well as advising private and institutional clients. She was a partner in Rosenberg + Kaufman Fine Art for 17 years, a contemporary gallery and a dedicated center for dialogue between visual art, literature, and music. Her experience includes directing both palmbeach3 contemporary art fair for three seasons and the first Houston Fine Art Fair. Fran has curated numerous projects in the US, Europe and Latin America and is a regular lecturer and panelist on art market issues at venues including Sotheby’s Institute and NYU.

Clients include The Warhol Museum and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires.

Louise Weinberg Curator, Visual Artist, and Photographer

Louise Weinberg is a curator, visual artist, and photographer. She has worked most recently at the Queens Museum where she organized numerous exhibitions including Bearing Witness: The Drawings of William Gropper, That Kodak Moment: Photographing the New York Fairs, The Islands of New York: Photographs by Accra Shepp, NYC Building Time Lapse: Photographs by Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao 2009-2013, Frank Oscar Larson: 1950s New York Street Stories, Wonderstruck in the Panorama: Drawings by Brian Selznick, Future Perfect: Re-Constructing the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair, Working Stiffs:  Photography from the Collection, and Selections from A Book About Death a project by Matthew Rose; curated by Louise Weinberg, 2009. Additionally, she oversaw a specialized collection of World’s Fair artifacts, and works of modern to contemporary art.

Weinberg is an accomplished curator having curated and designed over thirty exhibitions for a broad range of institutions including local and regional institutions such as the Hudson River Museum, Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts, Art Gallery of the Dalton School, SoHo20 Gallery, and the Atrium Gallery at LaGuardia Community College, and has managed numerous exhibitions for the Queens Historical Society, the Poppenhusen Institute, and the Putnam History Museum in Cold Spring, NY.

Weinberg is an award-winning artist and photographer, having exhibited her work in numerous exhibitions at Otis College of Art + Design, Edinburgh Collage Collective, Metro Pictures, Materials for the Arts, Arsenal Gallery, Crest Hardware, Museum of Photographic Art, Art Gallery, Tempe State University; Brooklyn Art Library, Quetzalcoatl Gallery, Museu Brasileiro da Escultura, Art Gallery, C.W. Post, Long Island University; Local Project, Armory Center for the Arts, Art Shanty Projects, Emily Harvey Foundation Gallery, Barratt Gallery, Mobius, Inc., and many others. Weinberg holds an MFA in painting from University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, WI.

Angela Goh ’23 Senior at Macaulay Honors College (Brooklyn)

Angela Goh is an undergraduate student of Brooklyn College, a senior majoring in art and computer science and a student of Macaulay Honors. She was a former Liu Shiming Scholar, where she helped with the instillation of the “Passages: Sculpture by Liu Shiming” exhibition and conducted a guided tour for the reception night. Her focus in art is digital illustrations, primarily with drawing characters and animals, but she has explored other mediums such as painting and animation. Along with her art she creates video games, often programming and designing the games herself.

Sin-Ying Ho Associate Professor at Queens College

Sin-Ying Ho was born in Hong Kong, immigrated to Canada, and currently resides in New York City. Ho is an associate professor at Queens College, City University of New York teaching ceramics art. She holds an MFA from Louisiana State University in 2001, BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1997. 

Ho has taught and run workshops, lectures, and exhibitions across Canada, as well as from Metropolitan Museum of Art and Harvard University to Hong Kong and Jingdezhen – over 1000 years old city of porcelain in China. She has exhibited in the United States, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, France, Germany, Romania, India, Turkey, and Italy. She was nominated in 2011 for a Louis Comfort Tiffany Fellowship.  Ho’s series, “Eden,” was exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Giovanni Nicelli private airport of Venice Lido Island during Venice Biennale 2022.  Her pieces are in the permanent collections of museums, corporate companies, and private collections. such as America Museum of Ceramics Art in California, the Hood Museum of Art in New Hampshire, Gardiner Museum in Toronto, the Icheon World Ceramic Centre in Icheon, Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taiwan, and the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong. Ho is an Advisor of Taoxichuan Art Centre, Jingdezhen, PR China and a Trustee of Watershed Cent
