About the event

Liu Shiming Art Foundation is pleased to hold sculptor Liu Shiming’s retrospective exhibition Roots in midtown Manhattan during the Asia Week 2023. The exhibition will be on view from March 26 to May 31.

Liu Shiming (1926 - 2010) was one of the first generation of sculptors to graduate from China's prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts. During his 84-year life, Liu Shiming played a significant role in creating a new cultural image of China that was grounded in the contributions and sacrifices made by ordinary people. Liu Shiming's works have been showcased in several renowned galleries and spaces around the world, including exhibitions and in Beijing, Washington D.C., New York, Atlanta and Athens in Georgia.

The exhibition Roots showcases 33 sculptures that provide a comprehensive representation of the artist's style and thematic scope. The exhibition includes works representing different periods of his career. He is deeply rooted in tradition and folk culture, focusing on depicting everyday life and ordinary people, showing sincere and human expression. The artist valued communal happiness, including the act of working together, nurturing the next generation, and thriving in a community. These simple pleasures held greater significance in his eyes.

Please note that the exhibition is by appointment only. For more information or to make an appointment, please visit https://www.lsmartfund.org/ or contact at info@lsmartgund.org.
