Sydney, Australia – The Liu Shiming Art Foundation is proud to announce that Jennifer Jia Li van Ratingen and Lauren van Dort have been awarded the Liu Shiming Scholarship in Visual Arts at the University of Sydney. These scholarships aim to support emerging artists in their creative endeavors, providing them with essential resources to pursue their academic and artistic goals.
Jennifer Jia Li van Ratingen (2023) is a multimedia artist who works primarily in painting and sculpture. Drawing from her Chinese-Australian background, Jennifer’s work captures intimate moments in everyday life, focusing on intergenerational conflicts and familial dynamics within domestic spaces. The Liu Shiming Scholarship has provided her with financial support to fully dedicate herself to her studies at the Sydney College of the Arts. Jennifer was awarded the University Medal and Honours Class I for her Bachelor of Visual Arts and Advanced Studies degree.

Lauren van Dort (2024) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores memory through collage and abstraction. Her artistic process involves cutting, tearing, and reassembling images to reflect the chaos of both past and present experiences. Lauren’s dedication to her practice has led her to showcase large-scale installations and even open a gallery with her two daughters. Balancing her studies with home life, Lauren found the financial relief provided by the Liu Shiming Scholarship pivotal to her success.

The scholarship has been transformative for many students at Sydney College of the Arts. According to Associate Professor Andrew Lavery, Co-Director and Co-Chair of the Sydney College of the Arts:
"The scholarship has expanded opportunities for young and emerging artists undertaking degrees in Visual Art through generous financial support. The scholarship has allowed students to travel or buy necessary resources otherwise out of reach. Many students describe this boost as a pivotal moment in their studies, which takes their practise in new and innovative directions.”
The Liu Shiming Art Foundation remains committed to supporting the next generation of visual artists and fostering cross-cultural artistic exchange. The foundation congratulates both Jennifer and Lauren on their achievements and looks forward to seeing their continued success in the art world.
